Massage Therapy is rapidly becoming one
of the fastest growing professions in the world. From seniors to newborns
the benefits of professional massage therapy has been documented and
proven. There are many varied and effective techniques currently being
used in the industry. Massage therapy can be broken down into three
main areas: Light
massage, medium massage and deep tissue massage.
- Light Massage
Which includes Reiki, Energy work, Swedish and spa massages. Most Spa massage
is fairly light and designed to relax you. For people new to massage, this
is a good first step. Most light massage addresses the whole body at one
session. When it comes to massage education, the Spa industry has always
been at the fore front. Until recently, only the elite
knew the value of massage. Most royal families receive massage daily.
- Medium Massage
Some Spas utilize medium massage techniques, but medium message is much more
commonly practiced by independent practitioners. Between light and deep massages,
the medium massage still covers the whole body in one session. In some cases
a medium massage may leave bruising following completion. Professionals that
practice this technique are usually well trained and have a great deal of experience.
You certainly should check on the experience of your provider before requesting
this more aggressive massage. You should never feel any acute pain during the
massage.
- Deep Massage
Born in ancient China 6,000 years ago, massage was used as a form of healthcare.
The ancient form of massage called "Tuina" is the foundation of
many deep muscle techniques. Canadian Deep Muscle Massage originated in the
latter part of the 1800's. "Rolfing" was born
in 1959 at Eslan in California. Each of these techniques addresses only one
area of the body at any one time, and the practitioners are generally very
skilled. Again, sharp pain is not to be acceptable.
Discomfort is certainly normal. Deep massage is ordinarily for athletes,
individuals that do heavy lifting or strenuous work or anyone suffering from
acute pain.
